Francis Kurkdjian's 1995 composition for Jean Paul Gaultier is the reason a whole generation of men's fragrance smells the way it does. Lavender, mint, cardamom, bergamot and artemisia open it cold and shaving-soap clean; cinnamon, orange blossom and caraway warm the middle; and vanilla, tonka bean, amber, sandalwood and cedar make the sweet, powdery trail it is known for.
